More than one hundred African-American men were tortured by former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge or police officers under his command. Some of the people who were tortured have become outspoken advocates for the cause of raising awareness and seeking justice for the survivors and perpetrators. Some of the victims of torture remain anonymous, a particularly painful legacy of this terrible story.

Darrell Cannon and Anthony Holmes attended the opening reception for Opening the Black Box: the Charge is Torture at Sullivan Galleries. The two torture survivors signed their names along side those of the other identified survivors of police torture. The wall drawing of torture survivors' names was part of a collaborative Black Box installation by CTJM artists.
